当初、本研究ではノースカロライナ大学チャペルヒル校での研究活動を中心にして、アメリカ南部文学のモダニズム受容に女性作家たちがどのように寄与してきたのかを、現地で資料を収集して検証する予定であった。特に、女性作家たちが科学的言説を取り入れて、モダニズムの萌芽となる作品を創作していたことを指摘し、作品分析と現地調査によって研究を進めようと計画した。しかし、コロナ禍で渡航できず、1年目は日本国内で資料を収集した。その間、サイバー大学で最新の情報技術に触れる機会を得て、女性と科学というテーマを身をもって体験できた。グラスゴーの時代には医科学が最新の科学であったが、現代の情報化社会では情報技術の知識が重要であることを、日常業務のマクロデータ分析から実感した。ここから、19世紀末の自然主義作家たちが文学と科学を融合しようとした試みは、現代においても意味があり、文学と情報技術によっても革新的な作品が生まれる可能性があることがわかった。また、女性作家と科学という主題は現代社会においても重要なテーマであることを提示するため、マーガレット・アトウッドの児童文学の短編集を分析し、その結果を学会で発表した。これによって、ポストモダニズム的な視座で古典文学の植民地主義を語りなおすという、今後さらに探求すべき課題が生まれた。2年目も渡米を計画していたが、コロナの終息が見込めず、申請時の計画は十分に遂行できなかった。退職により資格を喪失したため研究実績は1年分のみとなるが、今後につながる課題に向き合い、貴重な知見を得ることができた。
