The goal of this project is to develop a systematic, quantitative coarse-graining approach for a class ofinherently non-equilibrium systems, namely suspensions of self-propelled particles. We will link particlebased models with eective hydrodynamic models within a multiscale framework based on sequentialcoupling and parameter passing. We will combine microscopic Stokesian dynamics simulations witha mesoscopic kinetic model coupled to the macroscopic Stokes equation. The stress distribution,the long-time collective diusion and the eective self-propulsion speed extracted from microscopicsimulations will be passed as input parameters to the continuum kinetic model. In a second stepof coarse-graining, we will derive the eective hydrodynamic description in terms of particle density,polarization and nematic order parameter proles. In order to test the accuracy of our coarse-grainingapproach, the constitutive mechanical laws obtained from the microscopic and the continuum modelwill be compared.
