There is a wealth of Industrial applications which require the use of computer models for accurate prediction of dynamic fracture, including shielding protection for satellite, material fracture and explosion modelling, rupturing steel tubes subjected to internal gas explosions, all of which are applicable to the manufacturing, defence, automotive and aerospace industries.The objective of this PhD project is the development, implementation and benchmarking of a new computational paradigm for the modelling of dynamic fracture in realistic multi-physics scenarios. The recruited PhD candidate will extend the new Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) algorithm, recently developed by the supervisory team, to include the ability of capturing cracks initiation and propagation and bifurcation through Riemann solvers. In this algorithm, particle splitting technique can be easily implemented. To guarantee the impact and the legacy of the project, and with the support of Fifty2 Technology, the numerical developments throughout the project duration will potentially be integrated into their SPH code "PREONLAB". Interestingly, the new paradigm will pave the foundation for the unified modelling of multi-material and multi-phase engineering problems of interest to industry.
