近年、がんリハビリテーションは拡大傾向にあり、その科学的根拠が集積されつつある。しかし、その一方で、予後の限られた終末期がん患者を対象とした研究はほとんど無く、その有効性や推奨される具体的な介入内容は明らかにされていない。これは患者の不利益となるだけでなく、終末期がん患者に関わるリハビリテーション専門職のバーンアウトにつながるといった可能性もある。本研究は、混合研究法デザインを用いて計画したものであり、①質的研究として緩和ケア病棟入院患者に対するリハビリテーションに熟練したリハビリテーション専門職へのフォーカスグループインタビューを行い、②その結果を基に質問紙を設計し、③量的研究として大規模質問紙調査を施行し、④これらの結果を統合的に分析して、終末期がん患者に関わるリハビリテーション専門職のコンピテンシー（成果につながる行動・思考特性）および職種による強みの違いを同定することを目指している。第3年度（2022年度）は、緩和ケア病棟入院患者に関わるリハビリテーション専門職（作業療法士または理学療法士）を集めてフォーカスグループインタビューを対面形式で行う計画であった。インタビュー対象者が緩和ケア病棟に関わる医療スタッフであるという特性から、2022年度においても年度を通じて新型コロナウィルス感染症の感染拡大の影響を強く受ける状況が続き、移動制限ならびに集合型会議の開催制限が生じたこと、また、スタッフ側の感染や出勤制限などが生じるなど医療提供体制の維持が難しい状況も続いたことから、グループ形式から個別インタビュー形式へ変更し、データ収集を開始した。
