本研究の目的は、アジアゾウを対象にさまざまな認知課題を課し、ゾウの物理法則の応用力と鼻息による物体操作の巧緻性との関係性を検証することである。具体的には、鼻息および物理法則を利用することで餌を獲得できる課題を課し、物理法則の応用能力、学習能力の高さ、各個体の物体操作の正確さ（巧緻性）を検証する。ヒトにおいて、道具を用いた物体操作の複雑化とそれに必要な認知能力は共進化したという仮説がある。ヒトと系統的に遠いゾウの物理法則の応用力が形成された要因を解明することは比較認知科学の分野で重要な成果を提供することになる。本年度は、主に昨年度までに動物園にて実施したアジアゾウの行動実験によって得たビデオデータの解析をおこなった。次年度も引き続きビデオ解析をおこない、データをまとめあげて成果発表する。
