日本彫刻史では四天王像をはじめとする神将像の足元の鬼形を邪鬼と呼ぶ。邪鬼に特化した研究は少なく、造形変遷や制作背景など基本的な課題に多くの考察の余地がある。なかでも本研究では、とくに未着手の課題を残す平安時代後期に焦点を当てた。おもな計画と成果は以下の2つである。まず一つ目は、木地の表面に鑿目を残す邪鬼の検討である。日本の木彫像には、鎬を立てて縞状に鑿目を残す「鉈彫り」と呼ばれる仕上げの方法があり、邪鬼がその発生と関わるという見方がある。そこで、これまで個別に指摘される傾向にあった鑿目を残す邪鬼を相対的に捉えるため、平安時代前期から平安時代後期における作例を集成して図版を集め、いくつか条件を定めてリスト化し、その中から鑿目を残す邪鬼を抽出した。制作年代が明らかな基準作例を中心に、それらに準じる重要作例を対象とした。このうち７世紀の当初像を平安時代に模古したと考える當麻寺四天王像持国天、増長天、広目天の邪鬼について、鑿目の観察を中心に熟覧調査と撮影を行なった。二つ目に、史料面からのアプローチを行なった。すなわち12世紀に南都七大寺の巡礼を記録した『七大寺日記』と『七大寺巡礼私記』に登場する邪鬼の記述を抜粋して精査した。結果として同時代の作例ではなく、奈良時代の造形に対する強い興味が明らかとなり、次の時代へと通じる古典への評価が具体的に確認された。今後の課題は、引き続きリストを充実させて完成させ、それを元にまずは平安時代後期の邪鬼の造形の傾向や特徴を明らかにする。そのうえで通史的な観点から鑿目を残す邪鬼を捉えて比較検討を行い、鉈彫りとの関わりを考察したい。あわせて造形を決定づける背景について国内外からの影響を視野に検討を進めていきたい。
