本研究では、内田百閒の習作期における写生文から幻想小説への展開について、その要因・経緯を象徴主義文学、特にメーテルリンクの受容という観点から明らかにし、百閒文学の幻想性の萌芽のありようを把握することを目指している。当該年度は、百閒が明治42年12月に『六高校友会会誌』に発表したメーテルリンク作品の翻訳「夜気」についての研究に着手した。百閒の最初の幻想小説とみることができるのは明治43年3月に『六高校友会会誌』に掲載された「烏」という短篇である。それ以前には、写生文小説「老猫」（明治41年）、「昼顔物語」（明治42年）を同誌に発表している。つまり百閒は、その写生文小説から幻想小説への移行期に、メーテルリンク作品の翻訳を行っており、この翻訳が幻想小説執筆に何らかの影響を与えたことが推測される。よってまずは、どのような経緯でメーテルリンク作品に触れたのか、その翻訳にはどのような特徴がみられるのかについて確認することにした。その上で、翻訳「夜気」と幻想小説「烏」の比較分析を行うことを目指した。はじめに百閒が翻訳に用いた作品の原典と底本の特定を進めた。その過程で、同時代の和訳との比較を行った。そしてその報告を日本キリスト教文学会中部支部にて「内田百閒におけるメーテルリンク文学の摂取」として行った。百閒の翻訳は、“L’Intruse”（1890）のドイツ語訳“Der Eindringling ”からの重訳であること、当時の日本におけるメーテルリンク受容に照らすと初期の象徴的色彩の濃い作品を選んでいる点が注目できること、さらにその翻訳においてはいくつか目立った意訳があることなどが明らかになった。
