本研究は、ネオリベラリズムのもとで「上からの」プロジェクトやまちづくりの「資源」として着目されているサブカルチャー実践が、どのように「自分たちの」意味世界を作り出しているのか、すなわち、サブカルチャーに関わる人々がいかに支配的なイデオロギーや言説に完全に包摂されずに、それをやり繰りしながら共生的な生活世界を紡ぎ出しているのかを検討するものである。以上を踏まえた本研究の目的とは、サブカルチャーを媒介とした人々の実践がどのように生きられる場を創造し、またそれが人々のどのような行為実践を通じて維持されているのかを、現地調査を通じてミクロな視点から丁寧に検討することである。本研究では、具体的な調査対象として、長野県松本市におけるインディー音楽というサブカルチャーを媒介とした人々の実践とネットワークの広がりについてフィールドワークを行い検討した。そこから明らかになったのは、松本市内のサブカルチャーを媒介としたネットワークにおいて、ライブハウスやカフェ、クラブなどそれぞれの場を中心にコミュニティや小集団のようなものが形成されており、それらは「界隈」と呼ばれていることである。それらの「界隈」は、閉鎖性もありつつも常にメンバーが入れ替わるような流動性を持ち、排他性と開放性を持ち合わせていた。そのような流動性によってそれらの「界隈」同士の境界は曖昧であり、「界隈」同士が重なりあう形で松本のサブカルチャーがもつ独自のローカリティが作り出されていた。また音楽実践者と個人経営者の関係の重なりについてである。現地の音楽実践者の中に個人経営で店を持つものが多く、経営、生活と音楽実践が深く関与している。それによって「小商い」同士のネットワークが作られていることがわかった。
