ドイツのボン大学主催のオンライン・シンポジウムにおいて、Fookenさんは1927年の日本映画「椿姫」と、それに関連して発売されたSPレコードのつながりに関する問題について発表した。戦前のレコード文化全盛期に、日本では映画の語りをレコードに録音し、販売するという、世界でも例を見ない映画とレコード業界のコラボレーションが実現されたのだが、Fookenさんはその極めて初期の事例をとりあげて、無声映画の時代に音が確実に大きな意味を持っていたことを実証的に議論してくれた。同じシンポジウムで、私の方は比較映画史の立場から、初期の映画とレコードの緊密な関係について発表した。数か月間研究を進めていく中で、その成果を形にすべく、2021年の12月には早稲田大学との共催で、Fookenさんの発案した、オンラインによる国際学会が催された。参加者は日本・アメリカ・ドイツの研究者によって構成され、一般の研究者にも開かれたシンポジウムにしたため、アメリカ、ヨーロッパ、日本から多くの研究者が聞きに来てくれた。このシンポジウムの中で、Fookenさんは女優岡田嘉子が自身の独立プロダクションで製作した短編の舞踊映画を分析し、映画とレコードと舞踊の三領域の合体する実験的な映画の存在を広く知らしめた。そして映画製作の領域でまだ女性がほとんど活躍できなかった時代に、一女優が自分自身の製作で、こうした作品を作ったことの意義を高く評価した。このシンポジウムで、受け入れ教員として私も、明治、大正、昭和と移り変わる時代において、女性のモダニティーが髪やかつらによって移り変わっていく様を実証的に議論した。Fookenさんとの上記二つの共同研究によって、1920年代から1930年代初めにかけての日本映画における、テクノロジーとジェンダーの問題に関して認識を深めることができた。
