2022年度は、フリーア美術館所蔵法界仏像という6世紀、すなわち南北朝後期・隋時代の作品を中心に研究を進めた。このモニュメンタルな大型作品において、袈裟に中国仏教美術の中で最も複雑な世界図があらわされている。まず、フリーア美術館所蔵法界仏像の世界図を構成する、いくつかの重要な図像要素の新解釈を提示した。とりわけ、同作品の世界図の中軸線上のモティーフである須弥山の直下の城郭については、漢語仏伝に由来する大地中央の観念の影響のもとで成立したものであるとし、その図像の主題を大地中央の表象としての迦毘羅衛と捉える。このような新しい解釈は、古代中国における仏教由来の中心観念の受容の具体相の把握につながる。また、フリーア美術館所蔵法界仏像の成立過程における『華厳経』（南北朝時代に成立した『六十華厳』）の位置づけについて改めて評価を行った。多くの先行研究では、フリーア美術館所蔵法界仏像の世界図は、『華厳経』に基づいて成立したものと想定されているが、本研究では、同作品が成立した際に、『華厳経』から影響を受けた要素として最も可能性があるのは、その袈裟にあらわされている世界図自体ではなく、袈裟を表現媒体にして世界図をあらわしたという造像行為であることを明らかにした。このような新しい認識は、古代中国における世界図の複雑な制作実態の解明につながるとともに、世界図の図像形成と仏教経典との関係性の如何を改めて考慮することを促すものである。
