当該年度はコロナ禍の影響がなお強く、調査研究は専ら国内でのものに限られ、力点も比較宗教美術史的アプローチに置かれることとなったが、年度末に研究成果の一部をニューヨークにおいて公開することができた。対面＋オンラインにより100名ほどの国内外の参加者を得て、本研究の中で重点を置いてきた聖地霊場の記述としての絵図・古地図を中核に据えた研究集会を開催した。本研究がフィールドとしてとりわけ重視してきた熊野地方における代表的な絵図である那智参詣曼荼羅図の地元研究者ならびに本学ならびにハーヴァード大学研究者による紹介ならびに記述を中心に据え、熊野比丘尼姿による絵解きの実演を含めたこの催しは、海外の研究者からも一定の反響を得るに至り、次年度以降も海外において同様の催しを行う方向での検討を始めている。またメトロポリタン美術館において熊野関連作品の実見調査を行うことができ、熊野縁起絵巻全三巻における那智の情景は実際とは左右反転されていること、また第三巻において重要な場面が欠落している事等が確認された。加えて熊野曼荼羅図においては、各王子の名称記載が良好な状態で残存していることから、他の残存作例における王子像の特定に資する可能性が高いことが確認された。加えて、同集会に参加したクリーヴランド美術館学芸員との交流から、新宮市の妙心寺から40年来所在が不明となっていた仏像2体が同美術館に収蔵されていることが判明した。これらについては、熊野の研究協力者による研究発表を次年度行う予定である。各研究分担者は、コロナ禍の渦中において沈滞した研究を遂行しつつ、本研究での担当部分の研究遂行も、各自の観点から意欲的に進めており、論文・口頭発表を積極的に展開しつつある。これらの成果は、次年度において集約しつつ、相互参照・比較を行い、比較美術史的成果をまとめる方向で調整しつつある。
