コンゴ民主共和国ルオー学術保護区に生息する14頭の野生ボノボのメスを対象に、性的受容性の指標となる性皮（小陰唇と肛門周囲）の腫脹の程度、成熟したオスとの交尾行動、集団間移籍の時期を記録するとともに、収集した尿サンプルを用いて性ホルモン（E1CおよびPdG)の濃度を測定した。ボノボのメスは、出自集団からの移出が近づくと、性皮の腫脹を示しはじめた。尿中E1C濃度と交尾の頻度は、移出前にわずかに増加し、他集団への移入後に大きく増加した。性ホルモンの動態から推定される排卵または妊娠の兆候は、移籍後1～2年まで検出されなかった。これらの結果は、ボノボのメスが排卵サイクルが確立する前の思春期の早い段階で集団を移籍することを示す。チンパンジーに比べても早い時期におけるボノボのメスの移籍は、ボノボでは集団間の出会いが平和的で若いメスの移籍が容易なこと、移籍先で年長のメスからの攻撃を受けることが少ないことなどに起因すると考えられた。このように早い時期に移籍することで、新しい集団に慣れるまで生殖に関わるエネルギーコストを低減したり、定着する前に複数の集団を渡り歩いて将来的な繁殖に適した集団を見つける時間を稼ぐことができる可能性がある。

The concentration of E1C and PdG in 14 wild animals of the Democratic Republic of China was measured. The swelling degree, maturity, mating behavior and migration period of the animals were recorded.
