本研究では2021年度に日米で行った調査によって、移ろいやすい風景の画像を見た際に、「はかなさ」を感じがちな人は、「悲しみ」も感じやすく、かつ、その風景に意味を見いだし、心を動かされる傾向があることが示された。また、はかないものを美しいと感じる傾向のある人ほど、主観的幸福感が高い傾向が見られた。2022年度は、2021年度の調査を基にして、３つの方向に発展させた。まず、相関的な調査だけではなく、「はかなさ」を実験的に操作することによって、はかなさの知覚と感動との間の因果関係を検証する実験を行った。これらの実験によって、はかなさが顕著にされた条件では、統制条件に比べて、より悲しみを感じ、心を動かされる傾向があることがわかった。また、はかなさを感じた時の感情反応を、自己報告による主観的評定だけでなく、生理指標によって測定するために生理実験を開始した。さらに、文化的産物の中で「はかなさ」と共起する単語や歴史的変遷を検証するために、日本で過去約50年間に流行った歌詞の意味分析を行った。その結果、「花」「消える」「散る」などと共に「美しい」という単語と共起していることがわかった。また、ネガティブな感情の中では、「悲しみ」の感情に関連した語彙は、「怒り」や「不安」に関連した語彙に比べて、時代を通じてより多く見られている一方で、「悲しみ」の感情に関連した語彙は共に、過去50年の間に徐々に減ってきていることがわかった。
