文化と生得的な基盤との相互作用を包括的に明らかにするために、1.生理的感覚における社会・文化的差異の検討と、2.基礎的な知覚過程における社会・文化的差異の検討、および3.認知の文化的差異についてのメタ分析を行った。1.従来感情の研究において、生理的感覚は感情を規定する主要な要因の一つであることが示唆されてきた。しかし、生理的感覚が感情に与える影響は、社会・文化的文脈に依存する可能性が考えられる。そこで本研究では、顔面筋から感情へのフィードバック現象において文化差が見られるかどうかを検証した。実験の結果、アメリカ人は文脈に関わらず顔面筋からの情報を参照するのに対して、日本人は他者の目があるときのみに参照することが示唆された。2.さらに基礎的な知覚過程に対して文化が与える影響を探るために、顔知覚における文化的差異を検証した。顔知覚は従来、人間が進化の過程で獲得した比較的基礎的な知覚過程であることが示唆されてきた。しかし、顔の知覚も文化に依存している可能性が考えられる。本研究では、欧米人は東洋人に比べて、目や鼻の形などのパーツに注意を向けがちであることを実験を通して検証した。予備実験の結果から、仮説を支持する結果が得られた。3.一方、認知の様々なレベルにおいて文化的差異が見られることが、近年数々の研究において実証されてきたが、文化的差異の程度が認知処理のレベルに依存するのかについては議論されてきていない。そこで本研究では、認知の文化的差異を扱った過去の全ての実証的知見を対象としたメタ分析を行うことで、文化的差異の程度を規定する要因について検討してきた。予備的な分析から、認知処理のレベルによって文化的差異の程度が影響を受けないことが示された。ここから、生得的な資質と文化的影響とは切り離せず、認知処理のレベルに関わらず生得的・文化的両方の基盤に基づいていることが示唆されるだろう。
