本研究では、複雑な島嶼に適応放散したアジア産の霊長類種を対象に、特殊化したオス形質発現に潜む、行動生態基盤や性認知、進化原理について、蓄積された長期生態観測と認知行動実験を融合して探索している。特に、①霊長類ではオス形質の直接評価研究がほぼ皆無であり、認知実験を通じたメス選好性評価を世界に先駆けて検証、②オスの特殊化した形質（体重、犬歯、装飾など）の関係性（相関やトレードオフ）についての野外調査に基づいた定量化、③これらの知見に基づく性的二型の進化数理モデルの構築、といった3点の達成を目標に掲げて研究を行ってきた。本年度は特に、顕著な性的二型と社会性の関係性を検証した。中でもテングザルで見られる性的二型は、重層的な社会性によるオス間競合の強さにより加速化された結果であることが今までの成果により示唆されてきたが、その重層社会の詳細は不明であった。そこで本年度は、今までの蓄積されたテングザルの行動データと個体間の血縁度といった遺伝的な情報を統合することで、その社会構造を明らかにした。複数のハーレム型の群れが縄張りを持たず、移動域を重複させ、強いオス間競合にもかかわらず一見すると平和的な重層性を維持できるのは、ハーレムの核オスや、その核オスになれずにオスグループとして暮らすオス同士の血縁度が比較的高いことと関係しているためだと考えられた。つまり、父兄的なコミュニティーを形成することで、潜在的なオス同士の強い競合を軽減し、直接的な攻撃交渉を避けて音声などによるコミュニケーションを発達させた結果として、テングザルの顕著な性的二型が進化したと結論づけた。
