(1) 本年度も中世前期貴族社会における病気と治療の研究を続け、「人神」に関わる言説や実践について史料を収集し、分析を行った。身体の中に宿るとされた人神は中国の医書に見えるが、日本でも平安中期から諸史料で確認できる。人神は特に鍼灸を加える際に重視された存在で、日本の史料では『医心方』にその禁忌が記載されている。その後の古記録にも見られ、例えば『玉葉』には人神に関わる記事がいくつかある。なお、医事説話として知られる『医談抄』にも人神に関する話があり、丹波憲基の日記残欠を収める『丹家記』も同様であるが、後者は医師の観点から書かれており、珍しい史料として注目される。人神に関する史料は日本ではすでに紹介されてきたが、これらを英訳・分析する作業を行ない、英語圏の研究者にも紹介する論文を用意している。人神をめぐる言説や実践の考察によって、平安貴族社会である程度普及していた、医術的な論理に基づく身体の認識を垣間見ることができる。また、身体の働きは病気や治療と密接な関係を持つため、人神の考察を通して医師の社会的・文化的位置付けの理解を深めることも可能となろう。(2) 中世前期における占いや暦算についての研究に取りかかった。陰陽師なども含むが、主に仏教僧の活動を中心に史料を収集し、分析を行った。現段階では主として以下２点を検討している。①平安中期から陰陽師と宿曜師が日食の計算に関して論争する事件が古記録によく見られること。②九条兼実の陰陽師への懐疑がよく知られているが、ほかにも陰陽師の卜占のみに頼らない人物がおり、例えば藤原頼長は易経系の技術者に頼っていたこと。これらの占い師が主に仏教僧であったことは注目に値する。僧侶と占いの関係を取り扱う際には、しばしば僧尼令に言及されるが、古記録などから中世前期における僧侶の占い活動を論じる余地もあるだろう。
