1)古代仏教教団の検討の手始めとして、東大寺の組織・法会について検討した。素材として天平勝宝8歳(756)の「東大寺図」を選び、描かれた内容を現地地形や他史料を勘案しつつ分析した。結果は以下の通り。(1)東大寺は平城京東山の諸宗教施設(山の東大寺)とそこに結縁する都市民の信仰を基盤として成立した。しかし、官寺(野の東大寺)としての発展には光明皇后と良弁の果たした役割が決定的であった。この二重性こそが奈良時代東大寺の特色である。(2)「東大寺図」には描かれないものの、成立当初から多数の僧侶集団が存在し、彼らが法会を執行していた。その運営についても、従来からのものと国家的要請に基づくものという二重性が指摘でき、また山林と水の宗教的重要性が再確認された。(3)「東大寺図」に示された四至は平安時代になって拡大し、それが偽文書「東大寺寺地勅定文」に表現されている。東大寺領川上荘や春日山東方の山林修行場の発展が、その背景にあったと考えられる。2)奈良・平安時代の太政官政務を分析し、そこから律令官人集団の行動原理の変容について考察を加えた。検討に当たっては、政務作法を具体的に復原した。これによって以下の二点が明らかとなった。(1)決裁者が文書を閲読する「申文刺文」形式の政務の成立・発展によって、律令制以前からの口頭伝達を基盤とする官司運営理念に大きな変化がもたらされた。(2)律令官司の共同性の確保においては食事の占める意味が大きいが、「申文刺文」形式の政務は正式の政務の後の食事の場において発展した。
