研究目的：奄美大島に現存する軍事遺跡の調査・研究成果を整理し、同時代に構築された他地域の軍事遺跡や史料の調査を行い、得られたデータや史料等を比較・検討し、奄美大島に現存する軍事遺跡の特徴や価値を明らかにすることを目的とする。また、得られた成果を基に研究発表会を行い、調査成果を地域住民へ還元することも目的とする。調査方法：現在、確認されている軍事遺跡の再調査や整理・確認を行って、現況の確認や整理を行う。また、奄美大島の軍事遺跡と同時代に構築された、他地域の軍事遺跡（東京湾要塞）や当時作成された史料の調査・検討を行い、両遺跡の類似点や相違点を抽出し、その要因が何に起因するものなのか、東アジアの近代性を考慮しながら検討を行う。なお、軍事遺跡の研究者を招聘し、情報交換を行うことで、奄美大島の軍事遺跡の特徴を把握し、その価値を明らかにする。調査成果：奄美大島の軍事遺跡について、加計呂麻島等に現存する遺跡の現地調査を実施し、現況の確認を行った。また、これまで瀬戸内町で実施された研究成果について整理を行い、奄美大島に現存する軍事遺跡の特徴を抽出した。他地域との比較としては、奄美大島要塞と同じ要塞である東京湾要塞の千代ケ崎砲台・猿島砲台等の現地調査や関連資料（当時の史料等）の調査を行い、比較調査・研究することで、両遺跡の類似点や相違点を抽出し、その要因が何に起因するのか、奄美大島の軍事遺跡の特徴や価値についても明らかにすることができた。軍事遺跡の研究者である、防衛大学校由良准教授を招聘し、奄美大島要塞や同時代の他地域の要塞、世界情勢等について報交換を行った。また、来島にあわせて、地域向けの研究発表会を行い、地域の方々に研究の成果や奄美大島の軍事遺跡について知ってもらう機会を創造することができた。
