项目摘要

当研究は、三次元の造形である「彫刻」を論じることを大きな目標として掲げている。そのとき、この量塊（マス）の芸術であるとされてきた彫刻を、むしろ表面の処理（彩色）から検討を試みる。伝統的な彫刻観に従うならば、彫刻の本質は表面ではなく、内実に在り、中が詰まっているとし、中からあふれ出てくるような充実・充満が重要な価値観だとされてきた。しかし、実際の彫刻制作を鑑みるならば、ブロンズ彫刻やテラコッタは、中が中空であり、木彫もまた割れないように裏面をえぐり、大理石もまた重量を軽減するために内部を穿つことは慣例であろう。その意味で、内部の充実とはイリュージョンにすぎず、その時むしろ内部の充実に彫刻の本質をおいて、その表面を軽視したのは、絵画との分離・自律を諮るためではなかったのかという疑問を生むこととなる。「古典主義グループ」は、近世の彫刻のモノクローム性成立の契機と推移及び実態を問う。一方「古典主義以前」は、以上の彫刻観成立以前の豊かな彩色彫刻の歴史と特に素材別の考察を通して素材と色彩の関係を精査する。他方、「古典主義以後」には、19世紀の宗教像、抽象彫刻と新たな彫刻素材（鉄など）、および現代のポリクローム彫刻などの考察を通して、もっぱら「彫刻」の再定義を求められることになる。以上の研究の内容・目的を、研究代表・研究分担者・研究協力者それぞれが、理論研究、作品研究、素材の研究を通して遂行する。2021年度も、新型コロナ感染症蔓延によって外国出張を行うことができなかったため、専ら機材の購入と文献の入手・読解を行い、理論研究に多くを割くことになった。内実としては、先行研究の読解により、研究現状の把握に努め、その報告を2022年3月5日の研究発表会(慶應義塾ミュージアム・コモンズKeMco 9階、カンファレンス・ルームから対面及びオンライン会議のハイブリッド形式)において行った。
