本研究は、ハワイ日系仏教寺院が所蔵する資料の調査を中心としたものであったが、コロナ感染拡大の影響で2年間に亘って現地調査ができない状況であった。しかし、令和4年度に至って、海外渡航制限が緩和されたのを機に、2回の調査を実施することができた。第1回目ではハワイ・オアフ島に所在する曹洞宗4箇寺、浄土真宗本願寺派1箇寺、真宗大谷派1箇寺、日蓮宗箇箇寺、浄土宗箇1寺を訪問し、各寺院が所蔵する仏像、開教師による日誌、写真資料など約250点の文献資料・文化財を調査し、さらに仏具・位牌、法話やラジオ番組の録音テープ、信徒の日記・証書など約1100点の資料を確認した。また、第2回目では、第1回目で確認したオアフ島ホノルルの曹洞宗1箇寺、浄土真宗本願寺派1箇寺を調査し、約200点の文献資料・文化財を調査した。特に令和4年度の調査では、浄土真宗本願寺派の寺院において明治32年から始まる「ハワイ本派本願寺日誌」を調査することができた。ハワイにおける日本仏教の活動は浄土真宗本願寺派の曜日蒼龍によって明治22年から始められたが、宗派としては明治31年からのことで、本史料はその活動の初期の様子を知る上で大変に貴重なものである。また曹洞宗の寺院では、本堂須弥壇に奉られている西国三十三観音像から、それぞれの尊像に施主名と日本の出身地、ハワイの居住地が記されていることを確認できた。これらの記録から、当時の曹洞宗寺院を支えていた檀信徒たちの特徴などを伺い知ることが可能となった。なお、資料の調査とは別に、オアフ島ワイパフの曹洞宗寺院の協力を得て、第1回目調査の際に本堂内にインセクトトラップと温湿度データロガーを設置し、資料の保存場所に係る環境調査を継続している。さらにこの調査結果を踏まえて、ハワイ仏教文化財研究会・仏教史学会例会等で成果を発表した。
