年度当初、二年目の研究課題を二つ設定した。第一課題は、領事報告資料を中心とした資料収集の補充調査を重点的にすることである。第二課題は、収集資料をもとに研究成果報告書を作成することである。第一課題については、収集資料を整理検討した結果、『官報』・『通商彙編』・『通商報告』・『通商彙纂』などに掲載されている移民史料はほとんど収集しているので、外交史料館所蔵の活字化されていない領事報告の収集に重点をおいて実施した。第二課題の研究成果報告書の作成については、研究目的の一つ「領事報告資料を素材に、ハワイにおける日本人移民の動向を明らかにする」に重点をおき、1885年より、1900年までの期間に限定してまとめることにした。したがって報告書の副題は「領事報告からみたハワイ移民」とした。報告書(別冊参照)の概要はつぎのとおりである。内容は四節三項よりなっている。第一節は、官約移民数の十三年間の推移を概観する。第二節第一項は、1886年前後の日本人移民のハワイにおける状況を領事報告を中心に紹介し、ハワイ政府がなぜ日本人移民の移入を熱望したかを明らかにする。同節第二項は、ハワイの砂糖耕地の状況を、営業組織や製糖市価を中心に紹介し、日本人移民の動向の経済的背景を明らかにする。同節第三項は、1894年前後の日本人移民のハワイにおける状況を、領事報告を中心に紹介し、日本人移民社会の変化の姿を具体的に明らかにする。第三節は、官約移民の保健・衛生状況を日布渡航条約によりハワイへ渡航した日本人医師達の報告書を中心に紹介する。第四節は、ハワイにおける日本人移民の増大に対し、ハワイ政府のとった諸政策を具体的に紹介し、ハワイにおいて日本人移民の基盤が形成されていく過程を明らかにする。報告書の作成により、移民研究の視野が拡大し、研究を体系化することに大変有益となった。

The first section summarizes the thirteen years of migration. Section II, item 1: Consular report on the status of Japanese immigration around 1886 The second item of the same section is the introduction of the sugar farming situation, the industrial organization and the sugar market center, and the background of the Japanese immigration. The third item of the same section is about the situation of Japanese immigrants around 1894, the introduction of consular reports, and the specific changes of Japanese immigrant society. Section III: Introduction to the Report of Japanese Doctors on the Health Care and Hygiene of Japanese Immigrants The fourth section describes the process of Japanese immigration's growth and government policies. The report is prepared in a way that broadens the vision of immigration research and systematizes the research.
