本研究は、近世から現代までの東南アジア大陸部におけるイスラーム受容の変遷と現地社会との関係の歴史的全体像を明らかにし、その史的視野によって当地におけるイスラームの現代的位置づけを再評価することを目的とした歴史研究プロジェクトである。おもに縁辺事例（ラカイン・マレー・中国・チャム）と内陸部・移動事例を対象として、歴史学者と人類学者による合同調査の実施をとおして成果を得ることを目標としてきた。令和3年度の最大の目標であったミャンマーへの合同調査が、コロナ禍と2021年2月のミャンマー軍事クーデターにより実施不可能となった。そこでフィールド調査に代替することはできないとしても、かわりに歴史資料の調査・研究に注力を行った。とくに現地研究協力者であるゾーリンアウン氏の協力を得て、ラカイン地方の重要な前近代史料である19世紀の王統史文書３点を入手し電子化を行うことができた。また、1974年に鹿児島大学調査団によって収集されて鹿児島大学等に保管されているビルマ前近代文書のマイクロフィルム115巻には、ラカイン前近代文書が多く含まれていることがわかっているが、これを一括して電子画像資料化することができた。以上のミャンマー関係の歴史資料の調査・研究に加えて、３回の研究会の実施をとおして、各事例についての議論が深まった。第１回（7/31）ではカンボジアのチャム事例を研究協力者の大川玲子氏（明治学院大学）、カンボジアのムスリム事例をメンバーの小林知氏に、第２回（11/23）に、やはりカンボジアの近世クメール宮廷の事例をゲストの遠藤正之氏、ベトナム・チャムの事例を新江利彦氏に、第３回（3/23）に近世ラカインの事例を協力者のゾーリンアウン氏に報告してもらった。
