古代の東アジアでは、地域や時代ごとに特色のある都市が数多く造営されたが、それらに用いられた土木技術の詳細に関しては不明な部分も多い。本研究では、整地と街区の設定から建築資材の調達、建物の建設にいたる一連の造営作業について、数量的把握を含めた分析をおこない、その実態を具体的かつ総体的に解明することをめざす。そして、時代による変化や通時的な共通点を明らかにするとともに、都市が果たしていた社会的・歴史的役割を再考することを目的とする。5ヵ年計画の2年目にあたる本年度は、日本最初の本格的な都市と位置づけられる藤原京と、その前段階にあたる前期難波宮に関して、旧地形と地形の改変を示すデータ、条坊街区や主要区画にかかわるデータ、建物の数・規模と柱の数、柱の抜き取りを示すデータの収集を継続した。また、平城京についても、礎石などの石材を加えたかたちで同様のデータを収集するとともに。藤原・平城両京における瓦の出土状況を型式・生産地別に把握する作業をつうじて、それらを葺いた建物がどのような順序で建設されたのか、各地の瓦窯からどういった順序でどれほどの数量が供給されたのかを検討する材料を得た。並行して、『日本書紀』『続日本紀』をはじめとする正史のほか、律令や『延喜式』、正倉院文書などから、古代の都市造営にかかわる史料を収集し、古代の都市造営がいかなる体制のもとに、どのような方法と経過でおこなわれたのかを分析する素材とした。このほか、小規模ながら地方都市といえる国内各地の官衙および関連遺跡についても、中央の都城と比較するため、土木技術史的観点から、同様のデータの収集作業をおこなった。さらに、中国と朝鮮半島の古代都市のうち、日本との関係が問題となるものを中心に、土木技術史的観点から分析するためのデータを収集した。
