本研究課題は2020年度から3か年の計画であったが、初年度の途中で当該研究者が琉球大学への常勤職への採用されることとなったため、課題を約半年ほどで中途辞退することとなった。また、本年度初頭は世界的な新型コロナウイルス感染拡大状況（以下コロナ禍）の影響で、本課題で予定していた海外における現地調査や国内研究施設を利用した理化学的分析などが満足に遂行できず、当初から計画に大きな狂いが生じた。したがって、計画段階で想定していた成果については満足いく結果を得られたとは言い難い。しかしながら、コロナ禍による困難な研究状況に対して受入研究者と当該研究員との間で綿密なコミュニケーションをとり、協力や工夫をこらすことで最低限の研究活動は維持することができた。また、琉球大学へ移転後も本研究課題を引き続き継続したことで、理化学的分析や国内における調査を実施できたことで最低限の成果は獲得した。具体的な研究内容としては、当初はミクロネシア地域における現地調査の実施を予定していたが、渡航禁止措置のため本年度は実施を断念し文献調査や既存資料の理化学的分析に切り替えた。また代替の現地調査として、国内の南琉球地域の白保カラダギ洞穴遺跡（仮称）の発掘調査を実施し、本研究課題に関する新規的な研究成果を獲得した。この成果については現在科学的な分析も含めて解析を進めている。本年度における研究実績については、従来の研究結果を基にしつつ本課題にも関わる共著論文1本を発表した。このほか、本研究課題には直接的に関わらないが、間接的な関連性がある報告も1本発表した。また、現時点ではまだ成果を公開できていないものの本研究課題に関する研究成果についても現在論文としての成果発表を目指している。
