研究を開始して1年目の2021年度の研究対象は、「Bhavivekaの存在論」であった。これは、6世紀インドにおける中観思想の展開を、Bhavivekaを中心に考察する本プロジェクトの三つの柱である、「Bhavivekaの存在論・認識論・救済論」の最初の一つである。まず、Bhavivekaの存在論を，かれの「縁起」観を通じて明らかにしようと試みた。縁起についてはNagarjunaのMulamadhyamaka-karikaの冒頭ならびに第24章第18偈において言及され，Bhavivekaも独自の縁起理解を示している。Mulamadhyamaka-karikaの冒頭部分の縁起説については、Bhavivekaの施した注釈書Prajnapradipaの読解を進めた。この作業は、中観派の若手の研究者である林玄海氏と、京都大学大学院修士課程に所属の佐々木大道氏との協力を得て、週に1度のペースで、オンライン形式で実施した。このミーティングでは、研究計画であったCandrakirtiなどの周辺の思想家との比較研究も実施した。Covid-19の世界規模の蔓延により予定していた活動を制限されることもあったが、それと代わって関連する研究を開始することができた。具体的には、Bhavivekaの著作である『大乗掌珍論』の読解を、日本仏教の論理学（因明）を専門とする吉田慈順氏（天台宗典編纂所編輯員）の協力を得て開始し、また、Prajnapradipaの第18章の読解に着手した。前者には主にBhavivekaの用いる論理が、後者には彼の真理観が示されている。また双方に勝義と世俗の二諦説が示されており、特に世俗に関する記述が、Bhavivekaの存在論解明に資するものとなった。
