本研究の目的は、古代・中世インドにおけるイラン系宗教者「マガ・ブラーフマナ」の歴史の解明である。本年度もまた、前年度に引き続き、その基本資料である『サーンバ・プラーナ』および『バヴィシュヤ・プラーナ』のマガ関連諸章の翻訳を行い、この内、前者の『サーンバ・プラーナ』については、その主要部分（第3章、第6章、第24章、第26章）の翻訳を終えることができた。一方、後者については、マガ関連章全体の約三分の一にあたる第117章および第139章の二章分のみの翻訳に留まった。また、以上の読解に基づき、マガとデーヴァラカと呼ばれる別のバラモン集団との関連性について検討を行った。その結果、『サーンバ・プラーナ』や『バヴィシュヤ・プラーナ』では、劣ったバラモンとして描写される寺院付きのバラモンであるデーヴァラカとマガの類似性が意識されつつも、両者の差異の方がむしろ強調されており、劣ったデーヴァラカに対するマガの太陽崇拝者としての正当性が強く意識されていることが確認された。さらに、本年度は上記のプラーナ文献に加えて、『ブリハッド・ダルマ・プラーナ』や碑文資料、そして近代の英国統治下で行われた民族調査の記録などの比較的後代の資料を取り上げて、インド移住後のマガの歴史の解明を試みた。その結果、具体的な推論にまで踏み込むことはできなかったものの、上記資料の整理を通じて、今日のマガ・ブラーフマナには彼らが主に居住する北インドの東西で地域差が存在すること、そしてマガの活動の中心が、マガダ地方にあったことが確認された。これらの事実については、既に一部の先行研究も触れているが、今回、その文献的根拠を確認できたことは大きな意義があった。また、民族調査の記録には、近現代のマガについて、他のバラモンとは異なる風習を持つとの報告があり、これらは今後の考察の手がかりとなると考えられる。

The purpose of this study is to clarify the history of ancient and medieval religions.
