项目摘要

本研究は、20世紀の南部作家、及び、黒人作家の作品における奴隷制度に対する応答を、経済の表象から探究するものである。「補償」を主題としたWilliam Faulkner作品の研究論文の出版をもって1年目の課題を完了させた後、令和3年度、黒人作家の作品を探るという課題に移行した。主軸の研究として、Faulknerと同時代の南部黒人女性作家Zora Neale Hurstonの代表作Their Eyes Were Watching God（1937）のテクスト分析を行った。感染症の影響により文献調査等に遅れが出てしまったため、期間延長の承認を受けた半年間にて研究成果の取りまとめを行い、2022年9月に研究を完了させた。これまで重ねてきたテクスト分析の研究成果を、2022年5月21日開催の日本英文学会第94回全国大会にて発表した。この研究発表では、米国における黒人資本家による縮毛矯正技術の商業化をめぐる文化史に着想を得て、白人中心の美的価値基準によって階級化された黒人コミュニティ内の不和を論じた。その不和の中心にいるのは、薄い色の肌と直毛の髪を持つ主人公の黒人女性であり、彼女は、周囲の黒人から「黒人中産階級」なる特権的な地位を与えられると同時に、その身体を商品化されている。こうした経済的思考法によって価値付けされた黒人社会の構造的な描出に示されているのは、奴隷制廃止後、黒人が市民権を得た南部において新たに出来することとなった特有の経済問題である。これらの研究により明らかにされたのは、20世紀の南部作家、及び、黒人作家の作品群に託された経済的な倫理意識が、南部奴隷制という、肌の色により人間を区分する資本主義経済の特殊な一形態の構造を詳らかにするとともに、再建期以降の南部に出現する人種と性にまつわる暴力の歴史的文脈を看破していることである。

This research explores the responses to slavery and the appearance of the economy in the works of southern and black writers in the 20th century. The theme of "Compensation" is William Faulkner's research paper published in the first year of the project.
