项目摘要

本研究では、1899年から1936年におけるサモアの「近代的」な政治に対する現地住民の反応を、サモアで起こった反統治運動であるマウ運動の分析を通して、明らかにすることを試みた。キャンベラ学派を中心としてこれまで展開されてきた太平洋諸島史研究では、3点の課題が指摘されている。1点目は、太平洋諸島史を専門とする歴史学者が太平洋諸島に注目するあまり、地域を超えた大きな連関を無視してしまう結果となり、太平洋諸島で起こった出来事と「帝国」との関係がよく分からなくなってしまっているということである。2 点目は、自らの理想を求めて、活動した能動的な存在（＝主体）として書かれたのは、太平洋諸島のエリートたちのみであるということである。3 点目は、現代史が放置されていることである。こうした問題を解決するために、マウ運動に焦点を当てた。「近代的」な政府が設置される際にサモアの現地住民は、その政府の設置過程や運営段階において、欧米人とその政府のあり方について交渉を持ったり、要求を突き付けたりするマウ運動を展開している。そこで、サモアの現地住民の多様性を捉えた上で、彼らが海外地域の政府や諸組織に訴えた内容を検討することにより、現代史を含めた太平洋諸島（サモア）と海外地域との関係を描き出すことを試みた。分析の結果、①サモアの現地住民が海外地域の人々に訴えを起こす際の手法の変化、②サモアの現地住民の行動範囲の広がり、③サモアの現地住民が国際関係の中での主体として活動するようになったこと、④1899年から1936年を通じて、サモアにおいてマタイ制度や首長の存在は、政治の「近代化」が進もうとも残っていく、サモアの現地住民にとって欠かせないものであること、の4点を明らかにした。

This study attempts to analyze the anti-governance movement of local residents from 1899 to 1936. The study of Pacific Islands History is a three-point project. 1. The history of the Pacific Islands. Historians pay attention to the Pacific Islands. They ignore the relationship between the Pacific Islands and the Empire. 2 points, since the ideal seek, activity, active existence (= subject), Pacific Islands 3 points, modern history, etc. The problem is solved, and the focus is on it. The "modern" government has been set up to support the local residents, the government's establishment process, the operation stage, the European people and the government's side to support the exchange, the demand for sudden payment, and the development of its movement. The diversity of the inhabitants of the Pacific Islands and the relations between the governments and organizations of the Pacific Islands The results of the analysis include: (1) the transformation of the methods used by the local residents in the process of communication with the people of overseas regions;(2) the expansion of the scope of action of the local residents;(3) the main activities of the local residents in the process of international relations;(4) the existence of the system leaders from 1899 to 1936; and (5) the modernization of politics. The inhabitants of the city are not allowed to enter the city.
