项目摘要

本研究の最終的な目的は、快楽、陶冶、自由の連関を解きほぐすことで、ジョン・スチュアート・ミルの功利主義的リベラリズムの構造を明らかにすることである。そのために2021年度は、快楽と陶冶についてのミルの見解をめぐるこれまでの研究の成果を踏まえ、主として『自由論』を精読することで、その本においてミルは個性の発展をいかにして功利主義的に擁護したのかという問題を検討した。その結果、次のような結論が得られた。まず、ミルにとって個性とは少なくとも、自己陶冶を経た人の性格という意味を含むものであった。また、ミルは自己陶冶が特定の人間的な発展の必要条件であり、またそれが結果的に性格の多様性をもたらすと考えていた。そして、ミルが個性の発展を擁護する功利主義的な根拠は三つあった。第一に、個性はそれ自体で「幸福の一部」であり、美的快楽をもたらすものだからである。第二に、自己陶冶はミルが本人や他の人の幸福にとって有用だと考える特定の人間的発展の必要条件だからである。第三に、自己陶冶は人間の実践を改善する多様な生活の実験を促すからである。そして、第一の根拠である個性の快楽は、第二、第三の根拠を支える自己陶冶へと諸個人を動機づけ、第三の根拠である生活の実験は、第二の根拠である特定の人間の発展のあり方を正当化、あるいは修正するというように、これらの根拠は関連し合っていた。以上については「J.S.ミルにおける個性の発展」という題目の下、関西倫理学会で口頭発表を行った。
