项目摘要

本研究は、ウィリアム・フォークナーの小説を出発点としたアメリカ南部文学における身体表象の分析を通じて、表象において社会と個人とがなす関係性を理論化することを目指すものとして開始されている。２年目にあたる当該年度はまず、前年度の研究から継続して20世紀の南部女性作家を代表する存在であるユードラ・ウェルティの作品、特に長編小説Delta Wedding（1946）の分析を行なった。本研究では、小説の中でキーワードとなる「名誉」と「優しさ」という特質に着目し、失われつつあるものとしての南部プランテーション社会における伝統的な価値規範と、その中に生きる個人との関係が提示する「読み替え」の可能性について検討した。ここで得られた成果は、「「名誉」と「優しさ」ーEudora Welty, Delta Weddingにおける南部プランテーション社会の規範」という題目にて日本アメリカ文学会東京支部会（2021年5月8日、オンライン開催）にて発表を行い、今後の研究の方向性に有益な意見を得た。年度の後半では、近年批評的関心を集める「ケア」の理論にも射程を広げた。近代社会において模範的な政治主体とされる自立した個人というモデルに対する批判再検討を旨とする「ケア」の倫理は、1980年代後半以降のフェミニストたちにより形作られてきた。本研究はこの「ケア」という観点を導入することで、南部社会とその中に置かれた主体としての「個人」との関係を検討する上で本研究が依拠する身体表象をめぐるアプローチを、より多角的なものとした。こうした研究成果を踏まえた上で5月の発表にて行なった議論を深化させた論文を、次年度の学会誌へ投稿予定であるとともに、ウィリアム・フォークナーをはじめカーソン・マッカラーズ、トルーマン・カポーティといった他の20世紀南部作家を含む総体的な議論の見通しを得た。
