项目摘要

本研究は、アメリカ南部文学、とりわけウィリアム・フォークナーの小説作品における探偵小説的特徴の分析として開始された。これは「謎」とその「解決」、すなわち犯罪により撹乱された共同体の秩序を、犯人のアイデンティティの確定を通じて回復することをその骨子とする探偵小説のプロット上の特徴を、アメリカ南部の小説家たちが逆説的・批判的に利用し、解決の不可能な謎とその欺瞞的解決を通じて、南部共同体におけるイデオロギー的な抑圧、「人種」というアイデンティティ・カテゴリの虚構性を批判してきたという仮定に基づく。この問題に取り組むにあたり、人種とセクシュアリティの結びつきを分析する必要が生じたため、本研究は一昨年度より、ジェンダー・セクシュアリティ研究の領域へと射程を伸ばしている。とりわけ、小説中の「謎」として扱われることが多い登場人物の同性愛的な欲望の問題を分析するため、クィア理論からのアプローチが不可欠となり、バトラー、セジウィック、ベルサーニなどの代表的な理論家の思想を研究に取り込むこととなった。その中で、申請者は大衆小説的なプロットにおいて「恋愛」が、人種的・性的アイデンティティとミステリー的なナラティヴの結節点となっていることを発見した。結果、アメリカ小説におけるロマンティックラヴ・イデオロギーへの批判意識を分析することで、アイデンティティや他者との親密さの形式を多様化する作家たちのあり方を浮き彫りにできたと考えている。2019年6月に日本アメリカ文学会東京支部会で行った研究発表「カーソン・マッカラーズにおける少女性と少年性ーーThe Member of the Weddingを中心に」は、南部女性作家カーソン・マッカラーズの代表作『結婚式のメンバー』における少女の（人種差別的イデオロギーを内包した）異性愛規範への抵抗を分析したものであり、本研究の集大成として位置付けられる。
