本研究は、1920年代から満洲国建国に至る台湾人知識人の人種意識と民族意識の形成と定着、国際情勢の変化に伴うアジア主義認識の変容、他の被植民者同士との知的連結、という三つの側面を考察し、アジア共同体に対して台湾人が抱いた「理想像」とその盲点を明らかにすることを目的とする。今年度は、コロナウイルスの影響により海外への資料調査や発表ができなかったため、日本国内の資料解読と論文執筆を主とした。（1）資料解読： 1923年から1925年にかけて『改造』『中央公論』など植民地統治への関連記事と台湾側の『台湾青年』『台湾』『台湾民報』の台湾人言論を整理した。（2）論文執筆： 1920年代台湾人民族運動家たちの人種観／民族観及びアジア認識の実例を分析し、台湾政治運動家・王敏川（1889-1942）の翻訳思想からみたアジアの理想像に着目している。1920年代米国排日法案発布後、日本のアジア主義者に喧伝された人種対決と日華親善は日本国内ではあまり注目されなかったが、同時代の台湾では、議会設置請願運動を遂行するための論理として台湾人によって巧みに利用された。その中に、王敏川の役割が決定的な存在だといえる。王は、1919年に日本の早稲田大学に留学し、留学期間中に台湾文化協会に加入して台湾議会設置請願運動の発起に参加した。彼は雑誌『台湾青年』、『台湾』、『台湾民報』で、日本左翼知識人たちの言論や記事を中国語に翻訳して転載し、日本政府の同化政策と台湾総督府の言論統制に厳しい批判の言論を張っていた。資料を解読する中、彼の翻訳作業と記事の取捨選択には彼なりのアジア連盟への認識が潜んでいることが分かった。現在論文執筆中で、2021年度で学会発表と論文投稿を行なう予定である。
