本研究では“Claimant Narratives”の語りの特性とアメリカ文学史での位置づけを見出すべく、ナサニエル・ホーソーン、マーク・トウェインの作品を中心に、文学ジャンルを横断する形で、作品が内包する英米両方向からの「家系」および「所有」の問題を確認する。その上で、イギリスの伝統的な貴族制と、そこから離脱して誕生したアメリカ国家の民主主義の理想と現実が、イギリスの土地空間が絡んだ19世紀の物語を媒介としていかに描出されていたかについて明らかにすることを目的としている。令和4年度は、ふたつの研究を行った。ひとつめはナサニエル・ホーソーン作品に出現する「イギリスの荘園/屋敷」および空間所有の概念が、アメリカ国内の土地所有権への欲望といかに絡み合うのかに焦点を当てた分析である。特に初期作品から見られる「埋葬」の行為が、過去と土地不動産をめぐる問題に関連していたことを明らかにした。その上で、アメリカにおける根源的な土地所有の問題が、晩年イギリスを舞台とした未完の物語まで接続されていることを検討し論文にまとめた。原稿はすでに校了しており、令和5年度の5月に共著本として出版される。ふたつめはマーク・トゥェインの『アメリカの爵位権主張者』（1892）に関する分析である。3月に開催された日本ナサニエル・ホーソン協会東京支部において、トウェインの『アメリカの爵位権主張者』に関する口頭発表を行った。19世紀アメリカにおけるClaimant Narrativeの系譜についてのまとめを紹介をし、南北戦争を境界として本テーマの扱いがどのように変化したかについて分析をし発表を行った。またおよびフランシス・ホジソン・バーネットの爵位権問題が描かれた児童文学についても研究を進めており、論文の準備を進めている。
