项目摘要

本研究の軸となる宗教的枠組みとしてキリスト教のミレニアリズムがあるが、『クラレル』でのメルヴィルの到達点から振り返る形で彼の初期小説におけるミレニアリズムの表れ方について調査を行なった。調査結果は「メルヴィル小説におけるミレニアリズムと労働」（Sky-Hawk, 第１０号、2022年）として公表した。本論では、ミレニアリズムを研究する複数の歴史学者がメルヴィルの『ホワイト・ジャケット』(1850)の一節を引用して、これはミレニアリズムの典型であると述べている(Marty 46; Moorhead 44; Tuveson 157)点に注目した。また、メルヴィルが扱うミレニアリズム言説は、国境を超えた労働者の拡散を訴える場合が多く、これはジョン・ブライアントが長年研究してきた巡回説教師ローレンンツォ・ダウからの影響によるものと考えられる。それはあるときは「マニフェスト・デスティニー」に連結するものとして批判され、あるときはマイノリティ文化の独自性に向かう要素として称賛される。本論ではメルヴィル文学がそのせめぎ合いの中で生成してきたことを明らかにした。さらにこうした文学者とキリスト教のミレニアリズムの関わりについて、アメリカのプロテスタント信仰を研究したマックス・ウェーバーの調査との比較研究により、歴史上のキリスト教解釈が実態と異なって白人至上主義的に展開したことを跡付けた。これは「ミレニアリズム的資本主義と人種問題 ―メルヴィル文学を通したウェーバー批判」（日本ナサニエル・ホーソーン協会　第 40 回全国大会シンポジウム「アメリカン・ルネサンスと白人至上主義の構築」、2022年）として、口頭発表を行なった。
