项目摘要

研究3年目にあたる2022年度は、これまで２年間収集した資料を用いて考察を進めてきた研究内容を国際学会で発表し、また分析結果をまとめた論考を共著書として出版した。匿名性や偽名（ペンネーム）の使用は、元来、定期刊行物において一般的に実践されていたことではあるが、1860年代までの間、この手法が女性の執筆活動全体を後押しし、自らの「声」を活字の形で公にすることを容易にしていたことを明らかにした。女性執筆家は、ジェンダーや社会的身分を隠蔽することにより、世間の批判や詮索から身を守っていたことは否めない。と同時に彼女たちは、批評家、随筆家、小説家として多彩な分野における広範な啓蒙と知を追い求めるきっかけを得て、文筆家としてのアイデンティティを確立していたと言える。作品に本名を記載しない理由には、政治的、イデオロギー的、商業的な目的など多くの事情が含まれるが、女性執筆家にとって匿名性は、身を守る手段であったと同時に、戦略的に自己発信する手段であったとの結論に至った。男性作家が主導権を握る当時の文壇において、匿名や偽名を用いて書くことが女性作家にとって多くの利点をもたらしたことを特にジョージ・エリオットの個人的な状況に光を当てながら解明した。その研究成果の一部は、2023年度に英語論文として海外の学会誌（The George Eliot Review, No. 54）に掲載されることが決まっており、同論文は、国際デジタル・アーカイブ（George Eliot Archive)においても公開される予定である。
