项目摘要

今年度は、崔承喜の世界公演戦略や、戦前期の日本の文化外交をめぐって、以下のように研究を進めた。まず、2022年3月に行ったアメリカのNYC及びWashington, D.C.でのフィールドワークで収集した様々な資料（新聞、雑誌、文献、写真、パンフレット）の解読を進めた。そして、実際崔承喜が公演をしていたと言われているブロードウェイの劇場を調査し、その内容の一部をまとめることができた。崔承喜はアメリカ公演のために、1937年12月渡米し、翌年1月にはサンフランシスコの日本領事館で第一回目の公演を行っている。この初海外公演の実現について、当時日本や朝鮮では、すでに賛否両論があった。今回のフィールドワークでは崔承喜の世界巡演が可能になった背景に、当時ニューヨークにあった興行社（Metropolitan, Hurokの2社）の積極的なサポートが、あったことが明らかになった。しかしそれだけでなく、日本の海外宣伝のための文化政策の一環として崔承喜の舞踊活動が推し進められていたことも、大きな後押しとなっていた。一方で、1930年代における崔承喜や、日本の文化政策について報じている、アメリカのメディアを調べを進めた。上記ので述べたように、崔承喜の舞踊公演は、最初から激しい公演反対のボイコット運動に巻き込まれてしまったのである。しかし実際アメリカのメディアが「Sai Shoki」を報じる際に、崔承喜が帝国日本の文化の宣伝塔として活躍しているということ、そして朝鮮人としての崔の立場や危機感などについては、ほぼ関心を示していないことである。今回はその全貌とまで言えないが、アメリカのメディアで売り込もうとした崔承喜のイメージと日本の文化政策を進める政府側、そして廃れていく朝鮮の文化を継承しようとする舞踊家崔承喜、これら三者はそれぞれのズレは生じていたことが明らかになってきた。
