本研究において以下２点の目的を立て検証してきた。１）狂言の「笑い」と能の「鎮魂性」の双方が、西洋モダニズム演劇・詩を牽引したW.B.イェイツとエズラ・パウンドの作品に如何に昇華され、現れているかを、イェイツのtragic joy、パウンドのparadiso terrestreをキーワードに見極める。２）上演が難しいと言われるイェイツの劇、既存研究がほぼ存在しないパウンドの「狂言」を能楽として公演する可能性を探る。そのなかで悲劇（tragedy）、喜劇（comedy）、悲喜劇（tragi-comedy）という既存のジャンルの境界、そして西洋と日本という差異・境界を超えた新たな演劇を生み出した両者の文学世界のもつ現代的意義および普遍性を検証。また、正式に能楽の手ほどきを受けていないイェイツとパウンドが、その真髄を掴み創作に生かしたことをCertain Noble Plays of Japan やClassic Noh Theatre of Japan などのその能理論、またその能の英訳を精査する。同時に、原作の能の公演に接し、さらに能楽師の意見を聴取することで、イェイツ、パウンドの能学理解と彼らが能楽へ新境地を加えていることも見た。そして研究成果を、国内外の研究書・学術誌に掲載、国内外の学会・研究会・講演会で口頭発表することで、周知をはかった。能楽師（シテ方、ワキ方、狂言方、囃子方）、俳優など上演関係者と直接、演技や上演にかかる問題について議論、また、実演の機会に接すると同時に将来の公演計画もたてた。これは文学研究を実体化する独自の強みであり、また、演劇・詩の研究を実演という創造活動に直結させていることの証左である。イェイツ、パウンドを中心に研究してきたが、小泉八雲（ラフカディオ・ハーン）、アーネスト・ヘミングウェイも本研究に関わる重要な文学者として扱っている。
