项目摘要

本研究ではロマン主義運動が顕著であったイギリス、ドイツ、フランスとその運動を受け継いだ日本における牧歌、特にミルクメイドや牛飼いが登場する作品についてこれまで看過されてきた農業労働者たちの環境美意識にも焦点をあて、その言説を調査・比較対照し、そこにみられるロマン主義的環境美学の継承とその独自性を社会階層差・ジェンダー差・地域差から検分することで、環境美学の諸相を明らかにすることにより人間と環境の関係性を考究し、喫緊の課題である生物多様性・持続可能性に資することをめざしている。研究計画3年目の令和4年度は、令和2年度・3年度に引き続き、ドイツの牛飼いのアンナ・ルイ―ザ・カルシュ（1722-1791）とイギリスのミルクメイド、アン・ヤーズリー(1753-1806)の情報収集・整理・分析を行った。彼女たちが作中で描く風景は当時の景観詩にみられる「調和的な不一致」ではなく、あえて統一を与えない世界観を示しており、自然と社会の構造的相似が認められた。以上のように、これまで看過されがちであった農民の視点から環境美学を考究し、その成果を第19回ドイツ・イギリスロマン派国際学会にて発表した。また、上述のミルクメイド詩人、アン・ヤーズリーを含むロマン派の詩人・科学者たちの知的交流に焦点を当て、主として彼らの自然描写の中に埋め込まれた当時の科学知識との響き合いを検討することで、彼らの環境美学を比較・検討すると同時に、社会・経済構造が大変革したロマン主義時代にいかに最先端の知を踏まえながら課題に対処していったのかを追究し、その成果を日本英文学会第94回大会シンポジア「サイエンスと詩の弁明」において発表した。
