项目摘要

文法機能・範疇の具現方法には、非顕在的具現と顕在的具現という2つのパターンが認められる。本研究の目的は、競合理論という理論的枠組みを採用して、その選択が個別言語ごとに決定されていることを明らかにし、具現パターンの選択及びその言語間相違を文法内に適切に位置づけることである。競合理論によれば、統語部門と形態部門は構造具現をめぐって競合し、言語は統語部門での具現を優先する統語優先言語と形態部門での具現を優先する形態優先言語に大別されるという。初年度には、英語などの統語優先言語では、非顕在的具現が選択され、一方、日本語などの形態優先言語では顕在的具現が選択されるという記述的一般化を導いた。今年度は、この対応関係を、語形成という観点から検討した。具体的には、品詞転換と複合という2つの語形成操作は競合する選択肢であり、英語では、品詞転換が選択され、一方、日本語では、複合が選択されることを観察した。そして、この観察事実に原理的説明を与えた。品詞転換は、接辞添加を伴わないという点において非顕在的具現が関与し、その結果、単一形態素の語が形成される。単一形態素の語とは、形態的な内部構造を持たない語である。この点において、品詞転換は、統語的具現の手段と見做せる。なぜなら、統語的具現の結果、生じる形式、つまり、統語的具現形とは、必然的に、形態的な内部構造を排除した形式となるからである。従って、品詞転換は、形態的具現に適うものであり、統語優先言語である英語で選択されると考えられる。一方、複合は、全ての要素を顕在的に具現することで、形態的な内部構造を持つ語を作る。この点において、複合は、形態的具現の手段として定義できる。このため、形態優先言語である日本語では、複合が選択されると説明できる。
