项目摘要

日本人英語学習者が英語で会話を行う際に、どのような要因が会話意欲(willingness to communicate: WTC)に影響を与えるかを調査することは、将来自律した英語使用者・英語話者を育成するために重要なことである。この点を踏まえ、2022年度は2名の女子学生と2名の男子学生のコンピューターを介してコミュニケーション(CMC: Zoom)における、WTCの変動に関して調査を行った。方法として、5分間の会話を録画し、終了直後にその録画された会話を見ながら、20秒ごとのWTCの変動についてインタビューを行った。結果として、会話の中で質問されたときに答えられた、話している内容に関して十分な知識があった、会話が途切れそうになった際でも話を続けられた、時にはWTCが向上していた。これらの結果から、英語で会話をさせる際にはある程度両者が知っている内容で、質問を多くさせ、話すことがなくなった際にはトピックを変え、諦めずに会話し続けるよう指導することが重要である。次に、相手の言っている英語が理解できない時にWTCが低下する傾向がみられた。日本人英語話者の特徴として、わからないことに対して明確に言うよう求める行為や自分が理解したことを確認するような行為を実際の会話の場で行うことが非常にまれである。ゆえにこのような行為を身につけさせることが重要であることも判明した。対面とCMCの状況を比較した際にはやはり対面の方が話始めるタイミングや表情・ジェスチャーが理解しやすいので、対面の方が話しやすかったという回答がみられた。今後は2022年度に実施できなかった留学生との会話などを分析し、さらなるWTCに影響を与える要因を質的に調査していく予定である。2022年度はWTCに関する内容で学会発表を1回行い、研究論文1本が学会誌に掲載された。
