本研究では、中国・明清時代に記された農書の分析を通して中国伝統農業の実態を検討し、中国農業がいかにして環境的制約を乗り越えてきたかという問題を考察することにある。令和４年度は、華北黄土地帯を対象に、清・道光16年（1836）に祁雋藻によって記載された『馬首農言』を中心的に取り上げた。本農書は、太行山脈裾野に位置する山西省寿陽県一帯の農業活動についてまとめた書物であり、記載内容は半乾燥地帯における雑穀（アワ・キビ）・蔬菜類の栽培と農具、牧畜・養蚕業などに及んでいる。今年度も、研究分担者の大澤正昭・井黒忍、研究協力者の村上陽子・藤本公俊・小野恭一らとともに『馬首農言』の精読を月一回位のペースで進め、その成果の一部を訳注として『上智史学』67号に発表した。『馬首農言』の記載について理解を深めるためには、雑穀地帯における農業調査が不可欠であったが、中国国内の諸事情により断念せざるを得なかった。そのため、日本でも有数の雑穀地帯である徳島県剣山地区を訪問した。徳島では、傾斜地においてキビ・アワなどの雑穀栽培が継承されているが、栽培技術や脱穀技術や調理法、さらに農具についてに実際に農家を訪問して聞き取り調査を行うことができた。また、この間、様々な農書を読む過程で農業の中の飢えへの対策について注目するに至った。そこで、『齊民要術』や『王禎農書』『農政全書』、さらに『救荒本草』などに記される救荒と食についての史料をまとめ、「飢えへの備えー中国農書の記す救済と食」と題する論考を『史林』106巻1号に発表した。
