项目摘要

本研究は、14世紀半ばから15世紀の環境変動期のエジプトを対象とし、環境変動と村落社会の状況、地方行政の変容との相互作用を究明する。そこで論点とするのは、第一に、村落社会における農業生産や灌漑、徴税にかかわる慣行や、それをめぐる人々の関係、第二に、環境変動期に見られた諸現象に対して、国家が見せたリアクションとしての地方行政の変化である。これらの問題に、文書史料から得られる村落社会の慣行や人的関係に関する情報や、叙述史料から得られる地方行政官の任官記録の解析によってとりくむ。これにより、中世の村落社会の状況を、環境史という枠組みからとらえなおすことを目指す。2022年度は、ウルバーンと呼ばれる人々に注目しながら、地方社会における保護・被保護関係が、支配・被支配の関係といかに関わるかについて整理を行い、学会報告および学術雑誌への投稿を行った。本研究が対象とする時代においては、支配層を構成していたマムルーク軍人が相次いで死亡し、土地権利者が次から次へと異動する事態となった。そうした中で、地方社会において一定の権威を行使するウルバーンことアラブ部族が、村落社会の保護者としての存在を高め、王朝の支配層は彼らに一定の権威を認め、交渉を行わずして地方社会での徴税権を行使することができない状況に陥っていた。文書史料に残る情報というのはしばしば一連の過程の結論部分に過ぎず、それだけを読めば、王朝の支配層は村落社会において支配者として不自由なく徴税を行っているように見受けられる。しかし、そのような支配・被支配の関係性を村落の農民たちと取り結ぶためには、まず村落社会を保護するウルバーンとの交渉が必要であり、重層的な関係の中で、はじめて徴税権の行使が可能となった。このような事柄を叙述史料に依拠しながら整理した。
