2021から2022年に、長崎ペンギン水族館の来館者に対し研究趣旨を説明し、同意を得た約80組の親子の会話を録音した。魚類が多種混泳する大水槽前での会話を分析した。子供の発話を「気づき」や「説明」など5項目に、親の発言を「視点の提供」や子の発言に同意する「強調」など7項目に、学習の内容は「構造と機能」「多様性と共通性」など5項目に分類し、各項目の発生頻度を明らかにした。子供の発話は、「尻尾が黄色い」「ああいう泳ぎ方をするんだ」という「気づき」が多く、全体の75％を占めた。一方親の発言は、「この顔を見て」という「視点の提供」や、「ホントだね」という「強調」が多く、それぞれ約40％と約50％を占めた。生命概念については、「どう移動するか」などの「構造と機能」への言及が約75％、「いつも端っこに居る」などの「環境との関わり」が約20％であった。家族ごとに「会話数」と「話題数」、そして会話に登場する魚類の「種数」を算出し比較した。まず家族ごとの「会話数」と「種数」、および「話題数」と「種数」には正の相関が見られた。一方で、話題数が増えたり、登場種数が多かったりする家族でも、1つの話題についてやりとりされる会話の数は５回程度で変わらず、また会話が多ければ「仮説」や「推定」を含む会話が起こっているとも言えなかった。最後に、「種名」に関する会話がどのように学習に役立っているのかを調べた。会話の始まりは、種名を含む説明や質問であることが約60％と多い。このことから、種を認識することは会話のきっかけとして重要であることが分かる。一方で、種名が判明することで会話が終了してしまうことも多く見られたことから、種名を知ること以上の学びを引き起こすことが重要と分かった。これらの結果を日本生態学会大会で発表した。
