本研究の目的は、①国連PKOにおいて犠牲者はどのように発生するか、②国連PKOにおける犠牲者が発生した際、国連および要員提供国はどのように報道するか（報道に犠牲の発生のしかたは影響するか）の2点を明らかにし、国際政治学及び比較政治学に寄与することである。初年度の令和2年度は、PKO犠牲者データセットの整備及び犠牲者発生と「報道のもみ消し」に関連する自国出身の部隊司令官の任命についての計量分析を重点的に行った。PKO犠牲者データセットは、地理データの入力、1990年代への遡及入力を主眼としていたが、データの分類を再検討し、既存のデータを洗いなおすことを優先した。これを用いて計量分析を行った。司令官の任命とPKO犠牲者の分析としては、①母国出身の司令官任命に伴い、同一国出身の兵士が、車列攻撃で亡くなる割合が低下する、②母国出身の司令官任命に伴い、同一国出身の兵士について、死亡した（またはそういった資料が存在する）がその死亡について未報告・未報道という事例が多くなる、ということが確認された。令和3年度はこの成果を論文にまとめ世界国際関係学会（International Studies Association）で発表を行なった。発表時のコメントを受けて犠牲者データ自体の早期の公表にも価値があると考え、データセットの紹介に関する論文執筆も行うことにした（現在も継続中）。令和4年度は犠牲が出た際に国連や部隊派遣国がどのような報道を行うか、そして、犠牲のタイプによって報道の仕方にどのような違いが生まれるかに関して研究を行う予定であった。しかし、本研究で重要となる報道のデータセットに関してウェブスクレイピングが体制が十分整わず、十分な進捗がみられていない。最終年度となる令和5年度で進める予定である。
