2022年度は、ジョセフ・プリーストリーを中心とした18世紀後期商業社会認識に関する研究を実施した。特に18世紀初期の国教会の重鎮であったジョセフ・バトラーならびに18世紀後期の国教会の重鎮であったウィリアム・ペイリーとの関連に焦点を当てた。ペイリーはバトラー同様、イングランド国教会の重鎮として商業社会をいかに国教会の原理と結びつけ正当化するかに苦心した。彼が選んだ最終的な決断は「妥協」であった。他方、プリーストリーは国教徒に属さない非国教徒（ユニテリアン）として国家の庇護下になかった。それゆえ、彼らの生活を守るために積極的に商業社会を受け入れ、その中で生きていく必要があった。そのためにプリーストリーは商業社会と彼らの宗教的信念を両立させる必要があった。プリーストリーにとって商業社会の正当化は彼らの「現実」を追認するために必要なことであった。このような観点から書かれた原稿を2022年度に公刊を果たすことはできなかったが2023年度内の公刊を目指す。また、プリーストリーならびにトマス・ベルシャムに関してすでに公刊されている著作等を中心に研究を実施した。しかしながら、新型コロナウイルス感染症の世界的流行を受けて、本来、実施予定であった未公刊の資料の調査等を2022年度も実施することができなかった。18世紀後半イングランドにおける教育の重要性やその宗教的要素等を明らかにすることができ、啓蒙と宗教や宗教と経済学の関係性を少しずつ明らかとすることができているように思われるので2023年度は2022年度同様、研究課題とすることとしたい。
