2022年度に中高年ひきこもり者に対しインタビュー調査した内容を用いて，ひきこもり状態から再び社会とつながるまでの過程を明らかにするための分析を実施した。対象者は中高年ひきこもり経験者３名（男性２名，女性１名）であった。ひきこもり期間は９年から27年間であった。各調査対象者には，１回90分程度の半構造化面接を２回ずつ実施した。調査内容は，ひきこもりのきっかけやひきこもり中の生活，支援機関につながった経緯などを尋ねた。分析には複線径路等至性モデル（TEM)を用いた。分析の結果，対人不安がひきこもり生活に影響し，社会規範や家から外に出したい親の意向を受けつつも，外に出られない葛藤が認められた。この長いひきこもり生活において再び社会とつながるための意識の変容には，自分や親に対する老いへの気づきや自覚そのものが，長いひきこもり生活にピリオドを打つきっかけになりうることが示された。したがって，中高年ひきこもりの支援においては，当事者がこのような気づきを得た機会を取りこぼすことなく，スムーズに支援が行えるよう，継続した関係を持ち続けることが重要である。また，再び社会とつながった後も，就労意欲が高い場合は，長いひきこもり生活による体力の低下などを配慮した短い時間で体験できる就労から始められるような取り組みの提案等が功を奏する可能性があることを見出された。以上より，得られた成果は，若年層のひきこもりとはその事由が異なること，また，長いひきこもり生活にピリオドを打つその要因として，当事者の「老い」が，意識変容のきっかけになりうることが明らかとなり，老いを活用した支援内容を検討することが今後の課題である。
