Recent results from our groups revealed that the metalloid cluster compound Ge9[Si(SiMe3)3]3¯ 1 exhibits a rich photophysics and photochemistry. As 1 is a structurally well defined molecular model compound for nanoscaled germanium particles, fundamental aspects of the fields of photovoltaic and optoelectronic systems can be addressed within the proposed project. On the other hand it should be revealed how the properties of such metalloid clusters are influenced by variation of ligand, counter ion or concentration of the cluster in solution. Thereby, the influence of such a variation on the photo excitation properties by UV light will be addressed, which, in case of 1 leads to electron detachment. The outstanding aspect of the proposed project is that here the large and easily modifiable cluster opens the possibility for detailed, time resolved investigations of the photo detachment performed mainly via time resolved absorption spectroscopy. The investigations might also open the door to comparable compounds of the homologues Si and Sn to reveal the influence of the central tetrel element on the properties. The interpretation of the results will be supported by quantum chemical calculations, partly in collaboration with Dr. Andre Clayborne at the University of Missouri. Based on these results structure-property relations for nanoscaled group 14 particles are achievable, also indicating the technical relevance of the proposed research project.
