本研究は、中世以前から続く密教空間を有する本堂（五間堂を中心とする）建築の近世化を江戸中期（元禄・宝永期）が完成期として仮定し、その実証を現存する建造物と仏教界の動向から考察するものである。本年度は、江戸中期に全国的に分布したであろう密教本堂建築の近世化を把握すること、仏教界の動向として護持院隆光の動向を整理した。具体的には、①近世化の動向について、北陸、四国、東北地方を中心に目視による実態把握を実施した。②近世化の技術の把握として、本堂建築ではないが、寛文八年に建設された足利学校大成殿（桁行3間、梁間4間、四周に1間の裳階付き）の当初設計の意図を改造履歴の整理や構造の比較と共に精査した。この設計には寺社奉行の井上河内守正利が行っており、寛文八年の御触書（寺社規制）の影響を考察する上で重要であった。また上田市の前山寺本堂の変遷を整理して、江戸中期ごろの作であることが分かった。また、上田市の前山寺本堂では、建築年代が不明であったが、調査により江戸中期の建築であることが判明した。改造は向拝の礼拝空間の拡張がみられるものの、大きなものはない。実測調査から作図を行っているため、江戸中期の中部地方の技術の指標として重要な資料の作成を行った。③として仏教界の動向として全国に寺院建築の復興・再興を促した護持院隆光に関する史料の整理を実施した。護持院隆光の寺院再興に関する功績はいまだ未整理であるため、各種史料の収集と一部の整理を実施した④として次年度の研究を進めるための史料収集を行った
