本研究は、19世紀末から20世紀半ばにかけて激しい境界変動を被った歴史的境界地域であるアルペン・アドリア地域における「境界化」の権力に対する地域住民の主体的実践を、できごとの起きた時点とできごと「以後」の時点という時間軸から垂直的に、またローカル／トランスローカルな視点から水平的に、複合的かつ立体的に検証する。2021年度は、引き続き新型コロナウイルス感染症の影響で渡航しての調査は叶わなかったが、理論面での知見の蓄積と、各自の研究へのその応用につとめ、学会報告・論文発表等を行った。本共同研究の取り組みが活用された事例として、国民国家の境界の構築をジェンダー視点から問うた学会発表（代表者）、境界地域の共同体がグローバル化状況における生存を歴史と記憶の継承のうちに構想する様相の観察（分担者）などが挙げられる。前者では、国民国家の境界形成期において、政治的想像力にジェンダーが作用していること、それによって、地理的境界と国民的境界の一致という「想像の共同体」としての近代国民国家が成立しうることを論じた。後者では、境界領域の共同体が、境界領域にあって、絶えず分断の力学にさらされながら、今日のグローバル化状況のなかでその記憶に積極的な意味を与えることを生存戦略とする様相が観察された。
