ボルネオ島に国土をもつマレーシア、インドネシア、ブルネイの3カ国は、2007年に「ハート・オブ・ボルネオ宣言」に署名し、東南アジア最大の熱帯原生林を持続的に管理することを宣言した。しかし、たとえ自然保護区となっていても、そこに暮らす先住民コミュニティが疎外され、効果的な管理が行われていないところも少なくない。本研究の目的は、熱帯原生林の保護と先住民の自律的生存を両立させる条件を探究し、持続的管理の具体的な方法を提示することである。具体的には、先住民コミュニティの居住空間・配置の違いに着目し、比較対象地域において原生林利用の現況とその多様性への影響について分析を行う。上記の目的に対して、本年度の研究実績は次の通りである。1、既存データに基づいて、先住民コミュニティの食に関する生活戦略の分析を行った。プナン人たちはサゴヤシから植物質食料を確保し、基本的に自給自足である。清冽な水の流れを利用したり、ある程度しっかりした構造物を水辺に作ったりして、デンプンを抽出している。乾燥や製粉といったデンプンを保存するための加工作業も共同で行っている。他の先住者たちの社会史と比較しながら、自然環境と調和し共存してきた社会の特徴を検討した。2、新型コロナウイルスの感染状況が収束次第、自動撮影カメラを用いた野生生物の生態調査が開始できるように現地衛星画像の確認や機材の整備を行った。3、バラム上流域の先住民コミュニティから提起された原生林の共同管理計画（案）に対して、2020年12月に国際熱帯木材機関（ITTO）が支援を表明した。国際的にも注目すべき動きであり、関係方面への情報収集を行った。
